Welcome to a whole new world of photography...portrait photography. There are three different types of portrait work. These are posed, candid and creative.
Posed Portraits
When it comes to posing I love imagining what I plan to get out the pose. If per say you plan to get a masculine shot of a man then you might have him cross his arms. If you want a more commercial look you may have the man sit on a chair with his head leaned in towards you on his hand with the chin down.
However vise versa if you plan to shoot a beautiful woman then you may have her face her body towards the shadow and face towards the soft lighting. Couple shots could also be accomplished by natural settings. Have them laugh about something funny. Then have them dance. Think how you can get the images you desire.
Candid Portraits
These portraits are much more natural. Meet your client in a location and have them do whatever they feel is natural to them. Shoot them as they live in the moment. You can transition this to posed portraits by observing how they act in an environment and seeing what looks good through the camera as you go along. Create something special.
Creative Portraits
This would be like taking a mirror and placing it on the ground and pouring water on the mirror. You could shoot someone looking at their own reflection in the mirror. It could also be images like some people do with milk baths. You could even have your subject appear smaller than the sculpture in the background in how you shoot. You could write your clients name with rocks (definitely done this,) to make the shoot unique.
Whatever your style and whatever your story remember the message you are trying to convey. Have fun with your shoot. Take in every moment as it happens and keep shooting! Have fun!
